Though New Year’s Eve is a time to be with loved ones and celebrate the waning year in style, not everyone is lucky enough to have a partner to share the evening with. Many youngsters this year, therefore, are taking matters into their own hands and are making sure they have a date for the night.
Supriya R, a PR professional, who broke up with her boyfriend of many years, but has bought herself a sexy number to wear to a New Year’s Eve bash, says, “I don’t want to sit around in the house and mope anymore.” And her solution for the evening? “I have asked out a common friend to be my date,” she says.
Many singletons say they’re not single by choice but because of their hectic schedules. However, they would rather have someone they barely know than raise a toast to 2012 alone. Techie Vishal Rai, says, “I am tired of being the third wheel at every party. This year, I've struck a deal with a girl I met on a social networking site. I hope it pans out.”
A hectic lifestyle is the main reason behind why people opt for quick-fix solutions and do not build relationships, says psychologist Sudha Bhogle. “Younger people feel more pressured to be seen with the opposite sex. Singles may feel they are missing out on something when they see other couples having fun. But opting for a temporary partner is not a healthy scenario as it is not built on a strong foundation,” says Sudha.
